André Rieu (born 1949 in Maastricht) is a Dutch violinist and conductor best known for reviving waltz music on a grand scale. In 1987 he founded the Johann Strauss Orchestra, with which he tours the world playing to sold-out audiences. His lavishly staged concerts, especially the annual open-air performances on the Vrijthof square in his native Maastricht, have made him one of the most commercially successful classical performers in the world. Rieu blends classical melodies with popular entertainment, reaching a very wide audience.
