The Chameleons formed in 1981 in Middleton, just north of Manchester, around singer-bassist Mark Burgess, guitarists Reg Smithies and Dave Fielding, and drummer John Lever. Their spacious post-punk — all reverb and interlocking guitar lines — never sold in bulk, but it became a reference point for later bands including Interpol. Script of the Bridge (1983) and Strange Times (1986), home to "Swamp Thing", are now regarded as classics. The group fell apart in 1987 after the death of their manager, and Burgess later toured as ChameleonsVox. Since 2021 the band has been active again as Chameleons — Burgess, Smithies, Stephen Rice, Danny Ashberry and Todd Demma — releasing the album Arctic Moon in 2025.
