Coffins formed in Tokyo in 1996 and have become one of the most persistent names in Japanese death-doom. The band works with extremely down-tuned guitars, dragging tempos and a low-end rumble that seems to come out of the floor rather than the PA; the lyrics borrow freely from horror and splatter cinema. The debut Mortuary in Darkness (2005) was followed by The Other Side of Blasphemy (2006), Buried Death (2008), The Fleshland (2013), Beyond the Circular Demise (2019) and, most recently, Sinister Oath (2024). Alongside the albums runs an unusually long line of split releases with bands such as Cianide, Sourvein, Noothgrush and Ilsa. Live, they play uncompromisingly loud and slow.
