David Friedman (born March 10, 1944 in New York City) is an American jazz vibraphonist and marimba player, widely regarded as one of the most influential voices on his instrument. He studied at the Juilliard School and has worked with artists including Leonard Bernstein, Wayne Shorter, Bobby McFerrin, Horace Silver and John Scofield. In 1977 he co-founded the marimba-vibraphone quartet Double Image with Dave Samuels. From 1989 he was a professor of vibraphone and composition at the Berlin University of the Arts, and from 2005 he taught at the Jazz Institute Berlin. Based in Germany for many years, he continues to perform regularly on German stages.
