Franz Welser-Möst is an Austrian conductor who has served as Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra for more than two decades, shaping its distinctive sound culture and making him the orchestra's longest-serving music director. From 2010 to 2014 he was General Music Director of the Vienna State Opera, with a particular focus on 20th-century opera. He maintains a close partnership with the Vienna Philharmonic and has conducted its celebrated New Year's Concert three times (2011, 2013, 2023). At the Salzburg Festival he has set interpretive standards with productions such as Strauss's Salome and Elektra. His many honors include honorary membership of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Kennedy Center Gold Medal in the Arts.
