About
Kasiva Mutua is a Kenyan percussionist and drummer based in Nairobi who tours internationally. She learned to play traditional drums from her grandmother at the age of six, even though women in her village community were not permitted to drum; on her way to becoming a musician she faced harassment and even the destruction of her equipment. She took part in the OneBeat exchange programme in 2013 and joined the Nile Project in 2014, an initiative bringing together artists from the countries around the Nile. In 2015 she co-founded MOTRA (MOdern and TRAditional Rhythms), an all-women percussion group. She was named a Global TED Fellow in 2017.
