Sonora Santanera is a Mexican tropical-music orchestra founded in 1955 by Carlos Colorado in the state of Tabasco. Modeled after the Cuban band Sonora Matancera, the ensemble built a distinctive sound blending bolero, cumbia, cha-cha-chá, mambo and guaracha, and rose to enormous popularity during the 1960s. It typically performs as a full orchestra featuring a rotating cast of mostly Mexican vocalists. After Colorado died in a bus accident in 1986, some members split off while the remainder continued under the Santanera name through several later reincarnations. With more than 70 years of history, the group remains a landmark of Latin dance music.
