About
Marina Abramović (born 1946 in Belgrade) is a Serbian conceptual and performance artist whose work has shaped body and endurance art for more than four decades. Her practice probes the physical and mental limits of the human body and the charged relationship between performer and audience. Widely regarded as one of the most important figures in performance art, she calls herself the "grandmother of performance art". In 2007 she founded the non-profit Marina Abramović Institute (MAI) to preserve and expand the discipline. Her performances and exhibitions have travelled the world, including venues across Germany's Ruhr region and NRW.
