Matt Berninger (born 1971 in Cincinnati, Ohio) is an American singer and songwriter, best known as the frontman and lyricist of the indie rock band The National. His distinctive baritone voice and literary, introspective lyrics define the group's melancholic sound. Alongside The National, he co-founded the side project EL VY with Brent Knopf. As a solo artist he has released albums including Serpentine Prison (2020) and Get Sunk (2025).
