About
Rick Astley was born in 1966 in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire. He played drums in the soul band FBI and took over as its singer when the group lost its front man — which is when Pete Waterman spotted him and Stock Aitken Waterman took him on. Their first single together, "Never Gonna Give You Up" (1987), and the album "Whenever You Need Somebody" introduced an unusually deep soul baritone to a worldwide audience. Astley walked away from the business early, then returned in 2016 with "50", an album he largely played himself, which went to number one in the UK; "Beautiful Life" (2018) and "Are We There Yet?" (2023) followed. The rickrolling meme handed his old hit to a new generation and won him Best Act Ever at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards.
