Sagopa Kajmer, born Yunus Özyavuz in Samsun in 1978, is one of the most influential figures in Turkish hip-hop. He began his career as a DJ and rapper under the name Silahsız Kuvvet and co-founded the group Kuvvetmira in 1998 before adopting the Sagopa Kajmer name for his 2002 self-titled album. His music is known for its melancholic tone, dense wordplay and literary references that echo his studies in Persian language and literature. He also runs the Melankolia label, releasing much of his own work independently.
