Shanty-Chor Bochum is a registered male-voice choir from Bochum that has been active for five decades and marks its 50th anniversary in 2026. Its repertoire is built on shanties, the rhythmic work songs of tall ships and whalers, extended by internationally known maritime songs and folk songs. German sailor songs of the 1950s and 1960s are a fixed part of the programme as well. The choir performs at concerts and festivals across Germany, and guest tours have taken it to Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, the USA and Eastern Europe. In 2019 it was one of the 20 choirs taking part in the WDR competition “Der beste Chor im Westen”.
