Soft Machine is an English band formed in Canterbury in 1966 and widely regarded as a pioneer of the Canterbury scene. Named after the novel by William S. Burroughs, its founding members included Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, Mike Ratledge and Daevid Allen, blending psychedelic rock with jazz and avant-garde influences. Over the years the group evolved from psychedelic rock into one of the most influential exponents of jazz-rock and fusion. Despite many line-up changes, Soft Machine remains active and continues to release new studio albums.
