The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is a musical ensemble founded in London in 1985 by George Hinchliffe and Kitty Lux. Its roughly eleven members play only ukuleles in various registers, from soprano to bass, performing in formal black-tie evening wear behind music stands as a tongue-in-cheek parody of classical orchestras. Their repertoire spans classical, pop and punk, often reworking well-known songs with unexpected genre twists. Highlights include the 2009 BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, as well as Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House and Windsor Castle. The group is widely credited with helping spark the worldwide resurgence of the ukulele.
