About
The WDR Big Band is the jazz big band of German public broadcaster Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), based in Cologne, and is regarded as one of the world's leading radio jazz orchestras. Its roots go back to a post-war dance orchestra, and in its present form it has existed since 1980, when the earlier entertainment ensemble evolved into an artistically independent group. Since 2016 it has been led by chief conductor Bob Mintzer, with Vince Mendoza serving as Composer in Residence. The band has collaborated with many international jazz stars and earned several Grammy Awards as well as the German Jazz Award in 2021. Rooted in North Rhine-Westphalia, it performs regularly in Cologne and across the region.
