Bonn's Alter Friedhof was laid out in 1715 as the city's first cemetery outside its former fortifications and today sits right in the centre, surrounded by streets, housing and commercial buildings. Covering 1.2 hectares, its numerous graves and monuments of prominent figures and notable artists reflect architectural styles from the Baroque period onward, which is why the cemetery is included as a stop on the Straße der Gartenkunst zwischen Rhein und Maas garden-art route.
