Built in 1833 by industrialist F. Vogelsang, the neoclassical Bürgermeisterhaus sits directly on Lake Baldeney in Essen's Werden district and once served as the residence of Werden's mayor. Since 1985 the listed building has been a cultural venue for chamber music evenings, cabaret, jazz, chanson, children's concerts and readings, with the Verein der Freunde des Bürgermeisterhauses Werden e.V. hosting cabaret nights there since 1986. Its two adjoining L-shaped halls seat up to 90 guests and are equipped for talks, workshops and concerts.
