Grugapark Essen

Essen's Grugapark grew out of the Große Ruhrländische Gartenbau-Ausstellung horticultural show that opened in 1929 and was subsequently kept on permanently as one of Germany's first public parks born from a garden exhibition. Rebuilt after wartime destruction, it hosted the second Gruga exhibition in 1952 and the Bundesgartenschau federal garden show in 1965. Today the park serves as a recreation area and as a stage for concerts and festivals, including a Sunday music tradition in its covered pavilion dating back to 1929 and larger open-air concerts.
