Gürzenich Köln

Martinstraße 29-37, Köln· 1 events

The Gürzenich in Cologne's old town is a late-Gothic festival hall building erected between 1441 and 1447 as the city's dance and merchant house, with a merchant hall on the ground floor and a grand hall for civic and imperial occasions above. Emperor Friedrich III was received here in 1474, as was the future Emperor Maximilian I, who held an Imperial Diet in the Gürzenich in 1505. Since 1857 the hall has hosted the concerts of the Cölner Concert-Gesellschaft, the forerunner of today's Gürzenich concerts; after being almost completely destroyed in 1942, the building was restored in 1955.
