The Hänneschen Theatre is Cologne's historic puppet theatre, officially run by the City of Cologne since 1926 under the name "Puppenspiele der Stadt Köln" (Puppet Theatre of the City of Cologne). Founded in 1802 by Johann Christoph Winters, it is considered the oldest permanently located puppet theatre in the German-speaking world and one of the largest in Western Europe. At its home on the Eisenmarkt in Cologne's Martinsviertel, all plays are still performed in the Cologne dialect (Kölsch).
