K21, part of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, occupies the Ständehaus, the former seat of the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament until the late 1980s. The historicist building, constructed between 1876 and 1880, was converted by Munich architects Kiessler + Partner, who added a glass dome over a rooftop sculpture garden, before it opened as a museum of contemporary art in 2002. It shows the state's contemporary art collection alongside changing special exhibitions by international artists.
