Melaten-Friedhof is Cologne's largest cemetery, dating back to 1810 when the boundary wall along Aachener Straße was built, though the site itself was already mentioned as "hoff to Malaten" in 1243. Its roughly 435,000 square metres hold about 55,540 graves, including the final resting places of well-known Cologne figures such as Willy Millowitsch, Dirk Bach and Alfred Biolek. The cemetery is today the subject of regular guided tours exploring its art and social history.
