The Krönungssaal (Coronation Hall) occupies the upper floor of Aachen's Gothic town hall, built in the 14th century on the remains of Charlemagne's Carolingian palace. Between 936 and 1531 it hosted the coronation banquets of the 38 kings crowned in Aachen, and from 1840 to 1861 Düsseldorf painter Alfred Rethel decorated the hall with a fresco cycle depicting the life of Charlemagne. Covering roughly 1,000 square metres, the hall is still used today for cultural events as well as festive receptions and dinners.
