The BIG BANDits are the big band of the University of Duisburg-Essen, founded in 1991 as an initiative by music-loving students. The roughly 20-member ensemble has been directed by saxophonist and music educator Nils Powilleit since 1993. Their repertoire spans the classic swing orchestras of Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller, arrangements by Thad Jones, Bob Mintzer and Peter Herbolzheimer, and contemporary composers such as Gordon Goodwin. In 1999 they became NRW state champions at the orchestra competition of the German Music Council. They perform regularly across the region, including the annual Christmas Jazz concert at Zeche Carl in Essen and shows at Steinbruch Duisburg.
