Herbert Grönemeyer was born in Göttingen in 1956 and grew up in Bochum, the Ruhr city whose name later became one of his best-known songs. He acted before he sang, playing Lieutenant Werner in Wolfgang Petersen's 1981 film Das Boot. The 1984 album 4630 Bochum, the best-selling German record of its year, made him a household name, and Mensch (2002) became one of the biggest-selling German-language albums ever, its title track giving him a first number-one single. His combined album sales run well past ten million. On stage he sets a hoarse, clipped delivery against wide arrangements and fills stadiums with it. His most recent studio album, Das ist los, appeared in 2023.
