Kai Schumacher is a German pianist and composer who earned his concert diploma at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, where he now teaches piano himself. As a performer he focuses on minimal music and contemporary American piano repertoire, including works by Frederic Rzewski, John Cage, George Crumb and Steve Reich. He also arranges pieces by bands such as The Prodigy, Slayer and Moderat for piano, while albums like "Rausch" and "Tranceformer" put his own compositions first, often using prepared piano and electronic textures. With singer-songwriter Gisbert zu Knyphausen he reworked songs by Franz Schubert, and with cellist Benedict Kloeckner he explores the music of Arvo Pärt in the programme "Fratres". Together with the Duisburg Philharmonic he develops new concert formats in the series "Kai Schumacher & Friends".
