Köbes Underground is a Cologne band founded in 1988 and closely tied to the city's carnival tradition. The group is known as the house band of the alternative carnival show "Stunksitzung". Their trademark is cover versions of well-known rock and pop songs rewritten with new, Cologne-themed lyrics, partly in the local Kölsch dialect. During their shows the musicians dress up in costumes, perform sketches and dance between numbers. The name references the "Köbes" (a traditional Cologne brewhouse waiter) and Cologne-born Nico of The Velvet Underground.
