The Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden was founded in 1548 by Elector Moritz of Saxony, making it one of the oldest orchestras in the world. As the resident orchestra of the Semperoper, it has shaped Dresden's musical life for centuries. Throughout its long history it has collaborated with major composers and conductors, including Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss, several of whose operas received their premieres here. The ensemble is celebrated for its warm, distinctive sound and performs in the opera house as well as in symphonic concerts and on international tours.
