The Evangelical church at Katernberger Markt in Essen was built in 1900/1901 to plans by architect Carl Nordmann and, with almost 1,500 seats, is the city's largest Protestant church. Known locally as the 'Bergmannsdom' and the last fully preserved cast-iron-column church in Essen, it is closely linked to the Zollverein Coal Mine UNESCO World Heritage site and, besides regular services, also hosts concerts as part of Essen's Kulturkirchen programme.
