About
Gregory Porter, born in Sacramento in 1971 and raised in Bakersfield, California, is one of the defining jazz vocalists of his generation. His mother was a minister and had him singing in church as a boy. Sport came first, though: in 1989 he took a full athletic scholarship to San Diego State University as a football lineman, until a shoulder injury ended that career. His mother died when he was 21, telling him from her bed, “Sing, baby, sing!” He has since won the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album twice — in 2014 for Liquid Spirit and in 2017 for Take Me to the Alley. In 2023 Blue Note/Decca released Christmas Wish, his first holiday record: a tribute to Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole, produced by Troy Miller, with three songs of his own.
