About
OMD — Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark — formed in 1978 in Meols on the Wirral, founded by Andy McCluskey (vocals, bass) and Paul Humphreys (keyboards) as one of Britain's first two-man synthesizer bands. "Electricity" (1979) and "Enola Gay" (1980) set the template: cold electronics carrying unusually warm melodies, with lyrics about the atomic bomb, Joan of Arc and shortwave radio. Architecture & Morality (1981) was their commercial peak, while the deliberately awkward Dazzle Ships (1983) has since been reappraised as a landmark. "If You Leave", written for the film Pretty in Pink, made them a US hit in 1986. Reunited since 2006, McCluskey and Humphreys tour with Martin Cooper and Stuart Kershaw; the band has sold over 40 million records.
