Primus formed in El Sobrante, California, in 1984 and today pairs founding bassist-vocalist Les Claypool with guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde and drummer John “Hoffer” Hoffman, who joined in 2025. The songs are built outward from the bass, drawing on progressive rock, metal, funk and psychedelia in combinations critics have never managed to file neatly. The major-label debut Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991) and its single “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” carried the band into mainstream view; Pork Soda (1993) and Tales from the Punchbowl (1995) both reached the Billboard 200 top ten, and the latter produced “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver”. Primus also wrote the original South Park theme. Onstage the band leans on improvisation, reshaping the set from night to night.
