Herbert Knebel is a stage character created and performed by the Duisburg-born German cabaret artist and comedian Uwe Lyko (b. 1954). Introduced in 1988, the grumbling pensioner from Essen-Altenessen speaks a distinctive Ruhr-area German and has become Lyko's most successful creation. Together with the comedy group Herbert Knebels Affentheater, the character has appeared on German stages for more than three decades, performing regularly across the Ruhr region and NRW. Lyko also presents the figure in solo programmes and in numerous television appearances.
