Born in Berlin in 1952 as Ronald Keiler, Roland Kaiser is one of the most successful German Schlager singers of all time. He trained and worked as a salesman before music became a career, singing in pubs in the evenings; the breakthrough came in 1980 with “Santa Maria”, which sold 1.2 million copies and spent five weeks at number one in Germany. Songs such as “Dich zu lieben”, “Lieb' mich ein letztes Mal”, “Manchmal möchte ich schon mit dir” and “Sieben Fässer Wein” followed, as did the duet “Warum hast du nicht nein gesagt” with Maite Kelly; his sales total more than 90 million records. Kaiser also writes lyrics for other artists, among them Peter Maffay, Milva, Nana Mouskouri and Karat. Each summer he returns to Dresden for “Kaisermania” at the Filmnächte am Elbufer.
